Concerns about the future state of the US economy are weighing on market sentiment, as it seems that expectations for next year are not optimistic.

Coronavirus Stock MarketThe US stock markets closed in mainly negative territory last week as the pandemic advances in the United States and despite continued hopes for an effective vaccine.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average went down by 0.75 percent during the session and closed at the 29,263.48 level, followed by the S&P 500 which fell by 0.68 percent and closed the session at the 3,557.54 level. Similarly, the NASDAQ 100 dropped by 0.66 percent during the session and closed at the 11,906.44 level, followed by the NYSE Composite which lost 0.26 percent and closed the session at the 13,827.00 level.

So far, 12,589,088 coronavirus cases have been reported in the United States, as well as a death toll of 262,701. This makes the United States the most affected country in the world, followed by India, Brazil, and France. Around 3 million new cases have been reported since the beginning of November.

Both Pfizer and Moderna recently announced that their vaccines have a 95 percent efficacy. Oxford-AstraZeneca joined them recently, claiming that its vaccine candidate has a 70 percent efficacy in protecting against the virus.

The United States is expected to begin its vaccination campaign by early December. It is also expected that the country will attain "herd immunity" by May after about 70 percent of the population is vaccinated.

Concerns about the future state of the US economy are also weighing on market sentiment, as it seems that expectations for next year are not optimistic. In its 2021 outlook, JPMorgan predicted that first-quarter economic growth will be negative mainly due to the spread of COVID-19 and its associated restrictions. Nevertheless, the economy is expected to get back on track during the second and third quarters.
